After one hundred years of wear and tear the Spreckels Theatre frequently needs to address the restoration of the various aspects of the theatre. We operate a 501(c) 3 corporation titled American Regional Theatre at the Spreckels or ARTS for short. ARTS maintains a Restoration Fund that is dedicated to financing improvements to the Spreckels Theatre. The money we take in at the Box Office from the Restoration Fee is one of the revenue streams that feeds the Restoration Fund. Over recent years we have undertaken numerous restoration projects in the course of operating the theatre.

To commemorate the Centennial we have initiated three long awaited restoration projects through ARTS with the additional help of private donations. They are 1) The restoration of our 75 year old marquee and blade signs; 2) The replacement of all of the theatre seating on mezzanine level of the auditorium; and 3) The complete maintenance, repair , and polish of the Grand Lobby, and a renewal and rewiring of the lighting inside of the onyx columns after being dormant for 65 years.

Mezzanine Seating

When these mezzanine seats were originally installed they were considered state of the art technology and the height of comfort and convenience. That was nearly 60 years ago. They have seen better days. Recently we have heard that our audience has been uncomfortable in the section and wanted more legroom. We have acted on the need to improve the mezzanine seating.

We have contracted with the American Seating Company to pull out all the old seating in the mezzanine and replace them with all new seats. They will be infinitely more comfortable for those sitting in the mezzanine. The new seating will provide more legroom. The seats will also display new end standards replicating the look that would have been familiar in the theatre in 1912. The standards will all have the Gothic Spreckels "S" on the panel facing the aisle. And all the aisle lighting will be new to add to the safety of seeing clearly while walking up and down the mezzanine stairs.
