During its 18 years working with homeless youth, Doors of Change has found that music and art classes help foster trusting relationships with youth months sooner than typical outreach programs. When they trust us, homeless youth will ask for help from our case manager to help their improve their lives. Safe housing is often a result.
Our award-winning Taking Music & Art to the Streets (TMATS) program in Ocean Beach helped place 90 homeless youth in safe housing last year along — and 39 youth found jobs. Since 2001 we have helped place over 1,900 homeless youth in safe housing. We help these youth break the cycle of homelessness and become productive citizens.
Doors of Change is committed to expand the TMATS program to a second location within the next 2 years so we can help more youth break the cycle of homelessness.
Proceeds from this concert will help with this expansion and ensure even more homeless youth get the chance for a better life.
Multi-GRAMMY Award winner Jason Mraz will perform two very special shows in his hometown of San Diego at Spreckels Theatre February 15 and 16. “SHINE,” a musical based on the singer-songwriter’s catalog, will feature performances by local arts education non-profit groups, including Banding Together, who brings music opportunities to individuals with special needs; Malashock Dance, whose education program is designed to bring access to dance for under-served students, low-income families, individuals with disabilities, and promising pre-professional dancers who may face financial barriers; and transcenDANCE, who guides young people in underserved San Diego County communities to transcend barriers, expand their ambitions, and create positive change for themselves, their families and community, through dance and performance. Grants from the Jason Mraz Foundation have empowered and inspired these groups to interpret some of Mraz’s most beloved songs through movement, singing, and visual arts. Additional participating organizations will be announced soon.
TicketsWalk-throughs of the theatre are scheduled by appointment only. Drop-ins cannot be accommodated.
